Course Outline

Description

This course will focus on educating South Pacific Children in Australian Schools. The course will aim at exploring some of the major issues confronting teachers, schools, communities in educating South Pacific Children. The course will involve working with South Pacific communities in Sydney and with South Pacific resource staff from regions and schools. The course is also designed as an orientation to possible internships in Pacific Locations.

Session I

Geography and Culture of the South Pacific. Useful resources. Tasks. Administration and organisation.

Session 2

Presentation of tasks 1-3. Educational development in the South Pacific, Needs of South Pacific Children. Key resources in South Pacific Education.

Session 3

Guest Speakers from Department of School Education. Reflection on working with children and communities

Sessions 4 and 5

Completion of Tasks

Session 6

Presentations and sharing of Interviews and Tasks

Assessment task

Students undertaking this course must complete 4 sessions coaching at the after school study centres the course has set up with the Tongan and Samoan communities at Croyden Park, Glebe, Macquarie Fields and other locations in Sydney. Students must also complete their coaching field reports and hand them to Mike Horsley Room 818
