DESIGN FEATURES IN DESKTOP PUBLISHING

In this module you'll learn how to identify design features effecting text and graphics in publications. Attention will be given to items belonging to the Master Page as well as to the Publication Pages. Master items will appear on EVERY publication page using the Master page e.g. usually the headers and footers including pagination.

The following pages which come from Newsweek have been scanned at 90% size so they are not as sharp as the originals.

1. Indicates items set out on the Master Page which includes the use of 4 columns of equal width, a wide horizontal red line in the header, the heading "Periscope", a thin red line in the footer plus page numbering.

2. A photo, headline and text (at top) and a sideboard (explanatory table) below, have been spread across two column widths.

3, 4 and 5 show how graphics of differing column widths can be positioned across part of two columns, filling a column or with right alignment respectively. Note how all graphics have a brief explanatory caption which is italicised so that it is not seen as part of the flowing text of the article.

6. Is a tinted panel behind the text. The fact that the photo, headline and text are spread over two columns informs the reader that this is the most important article on the page.

7. The text has been left justified or aligned.

8. Dropcaps are used for the first letter in the text. In the feature article the drop cap extends for 3 lines while its use elsewhere is for two lines only. Drop caps is a plugin feature in PageMaker.

9. shows the use of vertical rules between columns of text.

1. Indicates items set out on the Master Page which includes the use of 3 columns of equal width, a wide horizontal red line in the header, the heading "Interview", a thin red line in the footer plus page numbering and publication date.

2. A headline, with left alignment, has been spread across two column widths.

3. shows a graphic of one column width. It has no caption but the subject's identity is known because of a pull quote below the photo.

4. A pull quote, as the name implies, uses a quotation from the text. This is a positive example, not because of the text content but because the quote is black against a the paper background (in this case white). If a black or coloured panel showed the text in white (or paper colour) this would be an example of a negative pull quote.

5. The text, with the exception of the pull quote, has been fully justified i.e. the edge of the text block is aligned on both left and right.

6. A dropcaps is used for the first letter in the text. Drop caps is a plugin feature in PageMaker.

7. shows the use of vertical rules between columns of text.

8. shows the use of horizontal rules.
