Subject: LANGUAGE- Art Appreciation
Grade: 5 Primary
Duration: 20 minutes
General Aim: Acquisition of Skill (Appreciation)
Specific Aims: To develop an awareness of the contribution of various media, viewpoints and pose to unity, through a study of sketches by recognised artists.
Basic Method: Study
Preparation: Teacher: Has chosen a number of black and white prints.
Step
1: How have artists overcome the
problems we faced in our earlier lesson? See"Climbing on the
Nets". Art: Practice Setting the
Problem Prints are displayed on the board
and the artists' names are pronounced by the teacher and the
class to facilitate reference. A question is posed by the
teacher. Step
2: Children's comments. Looking for the
Solution After a short period of silent
study, children are encouraged to make any observations
which come to mind. Step
3: What media were employed by the artists? What effect do strong lines play in "The Clown"? How do
Daumier's lines suggest a different mood? Which sketches are most active? Why? How is attention focussed upon the principal figures in
Tiepolo's and Rembrandt's paintings? etc. Checking Findings and
Enriching Answers Through questioning, pictures are
compared and contrasted with reference to subject size,
significance of direction, effect of media on line and
subsequent mood. Teaches enriches observations where
necessary with background information concerning the
subject, artist or period. Step
4: The children's sketches from
earlier lesson, "Climbing the Nets." Summing Up A brief re-appraisal of the
children's sketches is made. Similarities in the use of
techniques, possible improvements, etc. are
discussed, Teacher commends individuals for
contribution to discussions
