General Aim: Acquisition of Skill (Expression)
Specific Aims: To provide children with an opportunity to speak on a topic, "Should parents be more lenient or are they already too lenient".
Basic Method: Expression
Preparation:
Participants: The topic, chairperson and four speakers have been selected in advance. This lesson and others similar to it, will prepare the ground for debating activities.
Step
1: Topic need not be totally supported or rejected.
Listeners note dubious statements and express opininions
when chairperson rules appropriate. Arousing
Interest Teacher briefly explains the
procedure to be followed and the tasks of the chairperson,
speakers and audience. Step
2: Expression Following introduction by the
chairperson, speakers present arguments, referring to notes
where necessary. Step
3: Audience
Situation Chairperson invokes time limit and
invites comments, questions and criticisms from the audience
after each speaker. At Chairperson's discretion, speakers
may reply to criticisms or refute arguments. Selected students attempt to
formulate the class consensus or opinion re the
topic. Step
4: e.g. Are arguments logical /
ordered /amplified /supported by evidence? Were speakers audible, clear,
fluent, persuasive, well paced, comprehensive? Assessment Students and teacher suggest
possible changes to improve organisational or presentation
factors. "Should smoking be banned completely?" Step 5: Renewed
Effort The topic for the following lesson
is announced and students are appointed roles. Teacher commends individuals for
contribution to discussions.
