Ancient Sparta Society has mystified modern and ancient scholars alike. Ancient Scholars such as Xenophon, Plato and [ Aristotle, Eumenes, Agamemnon ] are our most useful fourth century scholars. Modern scholars claim that the 'myth' of Sparta grew from the writings of [ Plato, Xenophon, Antipater ] who idealised the Spartan constitution and way of life.
This 'myth' of Sparta was aided by Sparta's differences from the rest of the Hellenistic world. Unlike much of the Hellenistic world Sparta was ruled by a [
monarchy, democracy, oligarchy ] The Spartan system intrigued ancient writers who both deplored and respected the system.
The Spartan education system also made it different from the rest of the Greek world. In no other society was physical activity so prized and no where else were [
slaves, women, old men ] given so much freedom and involvement in the education system. Their physical ability also made them great competitors in the [ Mediterranean, Pan Hellenic, Olympic ] games, which was a source of great pride for the Spartans.
