Wheat

Wheat farming is another important industry for the Parkes area. When settlers, Harris, Field and Genge started to grow wheat in the Parkes area in the 1860's the flour millers realised that the land produced a lot more grain than any of the surrounding areas. Wheat continued to be grown in the Parkes area and today Parkes has one of the biggest inland wheat sub - terminals in the Southern Hemisphere. The terminal, Mugincoble, receives wheat, barley and oats from farmers all over the region as it has done since it opened in 1954.

Wool

Men moving flocks of sheep through the area and down the Lachlan river were some of the people who opened up the land around Parkes. Wool has since made jobs for hundreds of people in the area. A topmaking service, Austop, which processes wool, has opened in Parkes and is growing all the time. Wool not only makes jobs for the people who keep the sheep and those that work at Austop, but also people who work in the wool storage and selling facilities in Parkes such as Western Wool and Ostini Wool.

Today farmers in Parkes are moving to new developments and new crops. There is a lavender farm, a Buckwheat factory, making snacks, noodles and chips, and several farmers are trying their hands at growing canola.
