Postal

In 1863 miners in Parkes demanded that postal services be extended to the goldfields. In the same year a postmaster was appointed to the area. After some years Cobb and Co Coaches started to take the mail to Parkes from Orange. In 1880 the first real post office in the town was occupied.

 

Newspaper, Radio and Television

Parkes has its own newspaper, the Parkes Champion Post, which was formed in 1932. The town has two radio stations, AM 2PK, operating since 1937, and FM 95.5, operating since 1997. Television transmission reached Parkes in 1962, parkes only received the last of its five stations, SBS, in the late 1990's.

 

Telephone

Telephones were introduced to the Parkes area in 1906. Telephones ran on a party - line system for many years. The telephone exchange was run out of the post office until 1965. Telstra now looks after the Parkes telephone exchange.

 

The Dish

Parkes shot to stardom recently as the major feature of the movie The Dish. The movie was loosely based on the role of the Parkes Radio Telescope in the 1969 moon landing. The Dish is still in operation today and takes part in space tracking operations.
