Edward Hammond Hargreaves was a gold miner who discovered gold near Bathurst in New South Wales in 1851. He was given the credit and reward for the discovery. He was born in Britain and settled in New South Wales in 1832, where he worked as grazier for many years. In 1849, he decided to join the gold rush in California. He had little success so he returned to Australia in 1851 where he later discovered gold.
