THE FUTURE OF TEXTBOOKS - International Colloquium
11 October 2001 at the Frankfurt Book Fair
An
Expert Teacher's Use of Textbooks in the
Classroom
Very little research into the use of textbooks has been based on
observation of teachers using textbooks in classrooms. Most studies
have have studied textbook content and the underlying characteristics
of textbooks ( Zahorik 1991 ). Some studies ( Zahorik 1991, Laws
1988, Laws and Horsley 1992 ) have sought to reveal factors
influencing teacher use of textbooks in teaching through
questionaires and interviews with teachers.
Educational
Equity? Textbooks in New South Wales Secondary
Schools
The study reported in this paper examines the influence of one
educational input, the availability of textbooks, on classroom
teaching and learning processes. This is just one method of examining
educational equity. What remains to be done is to investigate the
relationship between teaching style and textbook use and the
influence of both of these variables on student
achievement.
Teachers,
Texts and Curriculum Change
This study was unique in that it identified the resources collected
in bookrooms and staffrooms used to support the implementation of a
mandatory new syllabus and placed their acquisition and allocation in
the wider context of response to curriculum change.
