- POLICY FOR
ACCEPTABLE USE

- This policy addresses the safe management and effective use of
all of this school's Internet connections. The Policy relates to
the following;

- Department of Education and Training Computers in
Schools Policy.
- Child Protection Policy.
- Policies on Anti-Racism, Anti-Discrimination,
Discipline and Key Learning Areas.
- Memorandum to Principals (97/110)-Access to
Internet.
- Memorandum to Principals (97/234)-Student Publishing on
the Internet.

- The use of the Internet in this school will;

- Enhance student research, investigation and learning
opportunities and outcomes in all KLA's.
- Assist students and staff to develop communication
skills.
- Comply with acceptable community standards and the
provisions of this policy

- STRATEGIES

- 1. Information and communication
skills
-
- Students must not copy and publish material form the
Internet without acknowledging all sources.
- Supervising teachers are to ensure that students
conducting searches on the Internet are using appropriate skills
to define, locate, present and assess information.

- 2. Safety and privacy of students,
staff and other Internet users
-
- The school must not allow users to identify themselves
with personal information such as full name, address and other
personal identifying information which describes the personal
location of the user.
- Written permission from parents/guardians is to be
obtained before students work or photographs are published.
Published works must not contain the full names of students.
- Individual E-Mail accounts will not be created for
individual students. E-Mail account will be distributed on a year
or class basis as required.
- Students will be warned about supplying personal
identifying information across the Internet. People are not always
who they claim to be.
- It is the responsibility of all users to ensure that
passwords remain confidential and are known only to their rightful
owners.

- 3. Code of behaviour
-
- Students who access the Internet do so only with the
knowledge that they have read, accepted and will comply with the
Holroyd High School Internet Code of Conduct.
- Students will not access Cyberpatrol or other security
passwords and will not bypass or alter security restrictions.
- Students will not browse, hack into or alter any DOS,
NOS, MacOS, Windows or any control panel settings.
- Students will not give out personal identifying details
of themselves or others.
- Internet Relay Chats (IRC) are not permitted unless
directly sanctioned and supervised by their teacher and the site
Internet Supervisor.
- Students and teachers are to immediately inform the
supervisor if indecent, unpleasant or inappropriate materials are
found so that necessary lists may be adjusted.
- Socially unacceptable material is not to be downloaded
or sent via Internet or E-Mail.
- Students who breach this code of conduct will lose
access privileges to school Internet/computer privileges.

- 4. Management of Internet
access

- Staff at the school will be offered training
opportunities to access Internet facilities for training and
familiarization.
- Internet contact person, librarian, network
administrator and computer coordinator roles negotiated and are in
place.
- The school uses a variety of strategies to restrict
access to inappropriate material and to handle situations when
this material is found. Student E-Mail is to be composed and sent
under teacher supervision. Students conducting Internet searches
must be aware of correct and efficient techniques.
- Students and non-authorised staff will not have access
to alternative ISP's, BBS's or IRC's.
- E-Mail users will be aware of and comply with correct
"Netiquette" protocols.

- 5. Equity of student access

- The Internet facility is to be made available to staff
and students from all KLA's and with regard to policies on racism,
gender and age.
- Student use of Internet facilities must be supervised
by teacher/librarian as relevant to ensure equitable use
conditions adhered to.

- 6. Security

- Access maintained by Internet contact
person/librarian/computer coordinator.
- Cyberpatrol/security/antivirus provisions to be
maintained and updated regularly.
- All material entering system electronically and through
removable media to be virus scanned before opening.

- 7. Legal requirements and
copyright

- Any material accessed from the Internet will be
correctly acknowledged.
- All current copyright provisions are to be
followed.

- 8. Review provision

- This policy to be reviewed and endorsed annually by
school executive, P&C and computer/technology committees.
