SCIENCE EDUCATION WWW LINKS

This site contains links to internet sites for trainee and practicing secondary school Science teachers. It has been developed as a resource for students in undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education courses in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. It forms part of the resources collection for the Science Curriculum Units of Study in the Master of Teaching/Bachelor of Teaching and the Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Science degrees in pre-service teacher education at the university.

  2. Science NetLinks. A comprehensive AAAS (American Assocaition for the Advancement of Science) site containing internet resources for science teaching. Organised as "Lessons", "Resources" and "Benchmarks" for science teaching.
  1. Space.com. News, resources etc about space. Membership (free) includes email accounts and regular email/html bulletins on space news and events.

October - December 2001 selection

  1. SSEP: Student Science Enrichment Program. An on-line resource for enhancing student interest in Science. The Student Science Enrichment Program provides creative science enrichment activities for students in the 6th through 12th grades. Students who participate in these hands-on projects experience authentic science.
  2. Waterwatch Australia. The Waterwatch network is made up of individuals, community groups and school groups who undertake a variety of biological & habitat assessments and physical & chemical tests to build up a picture of the health of their waterways and catchments.
  3. Scirus. the powerful Internet search which distinguishes itself from existing search engines by concentrating on scientific content only and by searching both Web and membership sources. It enables scientists, students and anyone searching for scientific information to chart and pinpoint data, locate university sites, and find reports and articles in a clutter-free, user-friendly and efficient manner.
  1. NerdScience.com: The Non-Nerd;s Guide to Science. Teacher's resources and topics in science for teachers, students and science fans.
  2. Azoos.Com - Science Category. A search engine which has a Science directory. Categories include the 4 sciences plus other like Forensics, Anthropology and Astronomy.
  3. Case Studies in Science. A collection of case studies used to contextualise and guide the study of science.
  4. New UNESCO Sourcebook for Science Teaching. An on-liner version of an out-of-print classic guide for science teachers produced by UNSECO.
  5. froguts.com utilizes high interactivity to dissect a frog. It is probably the most realistic simulation of dissection on the web, and comes with online assessment and downloadable tools such as dissectable model frogs made from printable pdf files.
  6. National Mole Day Foundation. October 23 each year is national mole day - in American dateology its 10/23 (get it?) - and there are school and undergraduate level Chemistry activities at the site on the themes of The Mole.
  7. California Science Standards. A database of content standards for K-12 Science. Useful as a guide to appropriate outcomes for 7 - 12 science lessons.

  1. High school science webquests. A collection of sites aimed at high school science students. Includes science discipline webquests as well as one on Problem-solving, Constructivism in science education, Assessment rubrics etc.
  2. Sport Science. The Exploratorium site focussing on scientific principles underlying popular (American) sports , including skate-boarding, cycling, baseball, ice hockey.
  3. The Nobel e-Museum. Site for the Nobel Prizes - includes information on the prizes, Nobel laureates and related student activities.
  4. Animal Diversity Web. University of Michigan's on-line encyclopaedia, virtual museum, and science learning tool.
  5. ARKive. The world's electronic archive of photographs, moving images and sounds of endangered species and habitats.
  6. Kaplili.com. A science for (middle school aged) children site covering basic ideas in biology, physics, chemistry, geography/earth science and astronomy.
  7. Genetic Science Learning Center. A Genetics learning site for teachers, students and the public produced by the University of Utah with information and activities on basic genetics, genetic disorders, genetics in society, and a Thematic Units' collection of activities and research.
  8. TeaAch-nology. An extensive web portal for educators, TeAch-nology.com offers access to lesson plans, printable worksheets, over 150,000 reviewed web sites, rubrics, educational games,teaching / technology tips, advice from expert teachers, current education news, teacher downloads, teacher finance help, web quests, and teacher resources.
  1. Dictionary of School Chemistry Experiments. More than just Chemistry resources at this University of Queensland site. Among the UNESCO resources linked here is an on-line version of the classic (out-of-print) New UNESCO Sourcebook for Science Teaching.
  2. Delights of Chemistry (Leeds Uni Chemistry demonstrations on-line). On-line undergraduate chemistry demonstrations and recipes for same.
  3. Wright Center for Science Education. Science education resources from Tufts University "dedicated to the creation and sharing of novel instructional techniques and interdisciplinary resources for pre-college teachers".
  4. The solar system in pictures. With middle school children as its audience, this website has over 50 web pages with over 200 spectacular pictures. It has 2 purposes: To give a pictorial overview of the solar sytem and to quiz children about these pictures. After each page there are some review questions about the pictures on that page. There are also 15 picture quizzes with 75 questions.
  5. Writing Chemical formulas (valency cards). A set of OHP and printed masters of cards for constructing formulas from anin-cation combinations.
  6. Digital Librarian. A reference site: "a librarian's choice of the best of the Web".
  7. Microbe Zoo. The goal of the Microbe Zoo is to help students from 7 to 107 to learn about microbial ecology, the study of microbes in the environment.
  8. Timeline of Biology. An historical timeline (from the book Timelines of Science).

  1. The International Boiling Point Project. An on-line project in science processes and experimentation: "The purpose of this project is to discover which factor in the experiment (room temperature, elevation, volume of water, or heating device) has the greatest influence on boiling point. Anyone can participate in this year's project. All you have to do is boil a bit of water, record a bit of information, and send it along to us to include in the database of results. Then, students can analyze all of the data to reach an answer to the question: What causes a pot of water to boil? "

    • ABScott Educational software. Australian-produced software packages (largely text-based) for year 7 - 12 science students.

  9. Globe II - Trace gases study. GLOBE Project funded effort through the National Science Foundation committed to working with K-12 school students in the collection of trace gases near our Earth's surface. Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and other CFC's are studied to established trends in air pollution and climatology.

  15. Beyond Discovery. Beyond Discovery: The Path from Research to Human Benefit is a series of articles that trace the origins of important recent technological and medical advances.
  16. EXPLOREZONE.COM A comprehensive science current news site including sections for:
  1. Impact craters and their environmental effects. This web site will, over a period of several years, explore the environmental effects ofimpact cratering and the biological consequences of those effects. Ideas will be explored and explained as they appear in the scientific literature so that students,teachers, and the general public can follow the exploration of scientists as they try to unravel the secrets of life, its origin, and evolution on Earth.
  2. Science On-line (OTEN). Part of the OTEN Learning Materials Prodcutionproject for distance learning. This site links to on-line learning resources for each of the NSW Science syllabuses.
  3. Science Playwiths. An eclectic collection of science activities and resources compiled by Peter Macinnis, a prominent Australian science educator. Included is the extended simulation game The Ugly Islands a "web site designed to encourage the development of scientific thinking and creativity, using data that are available somewhere on the site."

  33. Science, optics and you. Science, Optics and You is a science curriculum package being developed for teachers, students, and parents. It is part of the Molecular expressions site. The Activities in Optics are designed to promote the asking and answering of questions related to light, color, and optics. The program begins with basic information about lenses, shadows, prisms, and color, leading up to the use of sophisticated instruments scientists use to help them understand the world.

  2. Center for Chemistry Education: Terrific Science Web Lesson Exchange. A collection of downloadable chemistry activities and lessons.
  3. Science Snacks. A collection of activities (from the Exploratorium museum) " that teachers could make using common, inexpensive, easily available materials. By using Snacks in their classrooms, teachers can climb out of the textbooks and join their students in discovering science for themselves".
  4. Spacekids. An interactive astronomy site for children, including a Flash animated Virtual Space Tour.
  5. SEGway (Science Educatioon Gateway). The SEGway program, funded by NASA's Office of Space Science, is a consortium of science museums, research institutions and educators working together to present the latest space science research for students, teachers, and the general public.
  6. SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space). Astronomy site from the University of Arizona. Includes The Nine Planets: Multimedia tour and a catalogue of astronomy pictures, including The Best of the Hubble Space Telescope.
  7. BrainPop. BrainPOP is loaded with a mix of education and animation created for children. With the tricks of Flash animation, kids can play games and watch short movies that explain a variety of subjects. Get help with homework, experiment with Bob the ex-lab rat, or learn about stuff in science, health, or tech of all kinds. Movies galore present information that's both friendly and easily understood. Quizzes ask interesting questions while the movies load up.

  14. Cascade Reservior Restoration Project . A problem-based learning project in high school biology.
  15. Heavens above. An astronomy site dedicated to " provide you with all the information you need to observe satellites, the International Space Station, the Space Shuttle, the dazzlingly bright flares from Iridium satellites as well as a wealth of other spaceflight and astronomical information."
