A quick look at what's happening around the country through individual school and Department of Education web sites! A range of measures is being adopted by the various governments across the States and the Territories, in providing schools with universal access to the Internet.
NSW: NSW has provided internet access and support to all NSW government schools. All NSW schools are now connected to the Internet. The N.S.W. Department of School Education site: Network for Education
ACT: Australian Capital Territory Education Information Network (ACTEIN) was established in 1994 as a collaborative venture between the four universities within ACT. The Department of Education and Training and Children's Youth and Family Services Bureau site: ACTEIN
Victoria: SOFWeb, a major initiative of The Victorian Government, is a service created by the Directorate of School Education in October 1995 as part of Classrooms of the Future programme. SOFWebA directory of school-related information and activities. It is intended that users will 'develop skills, ask questions, find peer support and professional development activities, and learn...to make the best use of new information technologies to enhance teaching and learning'.
Western Australia: The Western Australian strategy for promoting universal connection of schools to the Internet 'focuses on issues such as curriculum responsiveness, flexibility in schooling, staff professionalism and working relationships, resource management...and...is the focus of a major initiative dubbed Technology 2000-Internet in the Curriculum ...' Tasmania: All government schools in Tasmania have free access (restricted at present to text-only access) to the Internet , through the DECCD network, TASNET. At present, those schools wishing to have a fuller range of internet services do so through commercial ISPs. Department of Education, Community and Cultural Development
South Australia: The Department of Education and Children's Services site is SchoolsNet an organisation providing Internet access and online educational resources to Australian schools. ....'offers hardware and software solutions, technical support and curriculum-based training services.' Particularly interested in assisting schools in outback or country areas of South Australia.
Queensland: 'Connect-Ed' a project to connect all schools and offices to a system-wide network as well as the Internet. This site is expected to be completed in 1999.
Education Queensland@ State government department which delivers K-12 education throughout Queensland.
BushNet : Provides internet access for schools located in Far Northern Queensland, Australia.
Northern Territory:
Australian Curriculum Studies Association.This site contains links to recent policies and reports on curriculum matters.
Teachers Professional Associations Index an index of Web sites for various teacher professional associations in Australia.
NSW Teachers' Federation including:
Education Network of Australia (EdNA) a national education network providing a range of educational information and services. Established to deliver educational information to schools. A collaborative project between the Commonwealth and State Governments.
National Schools Network(NSN) is a school reform network which links together schools, teacher unions, and government and non-government employers. The network consists of more than 300 Australian schools and colleagues in universities that are exploring ways to improve teaching and learning by changing the organisation of schools and the work of teachers.

Quarenook - the home of Woolum Bellum
Rochedale State School a Queensland primary school. The site contains background information on the school as well as examples of some children's work. This site won the 'AFR/Telstra Internet Award for Best Primary Education Site' and was joint winner in the 'Courier Mail School's Home Page Competition' .
Herberton Secondary School a Queensland secondary school. The site includes student project work, articles and individual home pages, plus a teen magazine 'BusScene'. This site won the 'Queensland IT&T Award of Excellence for an Online Service' and was joint winner in the 'Courier Mail School's Home Page Competition' .
Elanora Heights Primary School in Sydney, acknowledged by 1996 International School CyberFair Awards. Awarded second place in the Environmental Awareness Category (1996 International School CyberFair Awards for its Rivers and Lakes Project which provides information about the Hawkesbury River and Narrabeen Lakes. The site received contributions from dozens of other schools around the world with material on their own local rivers and lakes. A similar project 'International Trees and Forests' is being developed for the 1997 Awards.
Fahan School a small independent school in Hobart acknowledged by 1996 International School CyberFair Awards and awarded Third Place in the Community Groups and Special Populations Category for Retelling of a Traditional Indonesian Folk Story:The Blooming Flower of Flores.
Eltham College in Victoria. Awarded fourth place in the Environmental Awareness Category (1996 International School CyberFair Awards for its site on the Urban Fringe , research involving the local community. The site includes publication of a report on the Eltham Copper Butterfly, an endangered species.
Mareeba State Primary School in Far North Queensland. Sarah's Special Needs Resource Page was awarded a Times Pick by the Los Angeles Times on 25th March, 1997. Sarah Clutterbuck is a Special Education Teacher at the school.

Search ERIC, Search ERIC WizardSponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, the ERIC database contains over 850,000 bibliographic citations and digests (as of 9/97). The Wizard allows you to search the database and also provides over 70 prepackaged search strategies which can be revised to suit.
