Beyond Just Games: Building on experiential learning in Drama. |
Whilst Drama is a very practical oriented
subject where students learn through participation in a
range of games, activities, and complex exercises, I am
considering how I/we can best consolidate upon this
experiential learning through "de-briefing" or questioning
of these practical lessons. As such, I am using this
internship at Newtown H.S.P.A. as an opportunity to
experiment with and explore three basic methods of activity
to follow up; 1.) Teacher lead in class questioning and
discussion at point of learning, 2.) A student journals for
general observations and reflections, and 3.) more specific
homework tasks and assessments to target objectives. |

Understanding ESL students in the classroom |
Looking at how ESL students respond to different learning strategies within the classroom. These being on an individual level with the teacher, small group situations and whole class situations. Giving voice to disadvantaged boys in public education. |
This project is about teenage boys who are struggling in mainstream education. The interplay of masculinity, ethnicity and socio-economic status is examined to find out reasons why mainstream schooling is not beneficial for them. First, the project looks at educational and juvenile statistics, available programs for boys, substantial research on masculinity and literature on youth. Secondly, their is a fieldwork component based at a Youth Centre. I spent a period of five weeks with six boys who were currently not at school. I utilised participant observation and semi-structured interviewing to explore why they didn't enjoy school, what they wanted to change about school, aspects of youth culture, their family and ethnic background, and their future paths. |

Cognitive Styles And Learning Strategies Of Final Year Accounting Students At Macquarie University |
A study was conducted of the cognitive styles and learning strategies adopted by, final year accounting students at Macquarie University. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory was used as the basis for assessing respondents' learning style preferences. It was found that there was no significant association between any of the cognitive style modes and academic performance, indicating that the assessment procedures at the university are free from bias in this instance. |

Accommodating to needs in beginner English |
My interest is at the CIEC. My project is directed at Group 1 beginner English. There are 3 students and they are from Sudan. The students have been at the centre for 7 months and haven't progressed into the other groups like other students. The students have no literacy . My project is to look at the strategies employed and the results. I will also look at the consequences if students do not make it through the system - for both student and teacher. Finally, I will look at other ways in which I could've helped these students using my teaching strategies. |

are optional, with many students choosing not to use them,

The Question Box |
As a teacher I recognise the importance of students being motivated and interested in what they learn in order for real learning to occur. In my practise I want to involve and engage students in their learning by stimulating their curiosity and interest in learning. Although this is what I want to achieve, I feel that I am yet to realise this in my teaching. With this in mind I came up with the idea of 'The Question Box' as a means of finding out what the students want to know as well as a way to give them a sense of ownership over the things they learnt. |

The thin red line: Maintaining student interest and enthusiasm in the Social Sciences. |
The lack of student enrolments in the Social Science Subjects for 2001 is of concern for the Faculty at Auburn Girls High; Senior Geography has not been taught at the school for a number of years. My research will attempt to ascertain the reasons why students choose their subjects for the Senior years (eg. relevance for future careers, parental expectations, teacher influence etc.), "The LINE" - what subjects are offered in the timetable for 2001, what learning strategies have been used in the past (why they have failed/suceeded). My Action component will endeavour to implement a variety of strategies used, not used, and created in order to maintain student enthusiasm for the Social Sciences. |

Visual Composition through Rugby Union |
The study presented here resulted in a collection of written and visual texts exploring the compatible elements of Rugby Unioun and Visual Composition. The collection of paintings, drawings and written work defines the compatible elements of the two disciplines and explains how these elements can be used in a cross-discipline teaching technique. Action research methodologies were employed to determine the effectiveness of this technique in a year 7 visual arts class. Through the results of anonymous pre/post testing, it was determined that the students simultaneously learned about Visual Composition and Rugby Union. The results suggested that the combination of traditionally incompatible disciplines in this case Rugby Union and Visual Arts, could be used as a successful teaching technique. |

Strategies for improving student literacy skills |
My action research involves the use of spelling tests as a technique to improve student literacy skills. The first phase of the research consists of giving the students a spelling test with no prior indication of or reference to words and their meanings. Students are simply told to study their topics. The second phase consists of giving the students the spelling test by randomly selecting 10 out of the 20 previously given key words. Words are given without their respective meanings. Students are only told to put the words in a sentence which shows that they understand the meaning of the word. The third and final phase consists of giving the students specific key words with their respective meanings. |

Co-operative Learning and Peer Teaching for lower ability history students. |
This research project sets out to gauge the reaction of students when they are involved in a cooperative classroom environment. My internship placement at a inner west Sydney boys private school saw me implementing a cooperative and peer teaching regime three weeks before exams, in the lowest ability year 10 class. I set out to raise interest in the subject for students dealing with a mixture of learning difficulties and motivational difficulties, within this compulsory history unit. Based upon what my supervising teacher expects from the class and the results that are attained during exams, I plan to assess the value of cooperative learning and peer teaching. And gain an insight into what the students think of this technique. |

Coping with the 'jelly bean' |
Laptops are used in yr 7 science. The students typing skills are not all that great. I want to develop teaching strategies to minimise time wastage using laptops in the classroom. i.e to work around/with the laptops in Science. |
|
'Differentiated Programming in the primary classroom. |
Differentiated programs are vital in order to ensure that each and every student is getting the most out of your lessons. Programs need to ensure that each individual student is being catered for, whether they be above or below the majority of the class. For example, gifted and talented students are often held back by teachers simply putting them onto 'fast-finisher' activities. In this example, we need o ensure that all teaching/learning experiences allow for the extension of these students, so that they are working to their full potential. The same idea goes for students who are having difficulty. |
