PROCEDURE

Step 1:

Body percussion is the making of percussive sounds using bodily movements such as clapping, whistling, and tapping on thighs and chest. Sometimes we can also make use of things around us such as knocking on doors and chairs etc.

Preparation for Practice

Teacher arranges students seating in a semi-circle (without desks or bags) and explains body percussion.

(2min)

Step 2:

The 10 rhythmic patterns made up on card. Can also incorporate some extra rhythmic patterns through improvisation.

Begin from shorter simpler patterns to longer and more difficult patterns.

Repeat the same procedure 3 times and only reveal the rhythmic cards in the last time one by one so that students can read what they are playing with close guidance from the teacher.

Demonstration With Imitation: A Warm Up Exercise

Teacher presents a series of rhythmic patterns using body percussion and students imitate after each one.

(5min)

Step 3:

10 rhythmic patterns(see following)

Further Demonstration and Imitation

The class is divided into 3 groups.

The 10 rhythmic patterns (RPs) are arranged on the board in groups of 3, 4 and 3 (or in any other 3 groups),and one series is allocated for each group of students.

The teacher leads through the RPs with each group one by one and rotates the parts, until each group has played every pattern.

(8 min)

 Step 4:

Practice

Students in groups of 3 improvise using body percussion RPs of 8 beats.

Teacher explains that groups will be performing their RPs together.

(3 min)

Step 5:

Students’ composition.

Assessment

Students perform their RPs one by one consecutively as one long piece of music.

The process is repeated again in a different direction for students to hear their RPs in a different combination as well as to have more opportunities to perform.

Teacher commends class for individual and group achievements (7 min)

  • Note: This is a short music lesson for primary students aimed at developing three areas of skills: performing, organising sounds & listening.
