Specific Aims: To define the main incidents in the story "Just As Good" by Noreen Shelley, through a study of the story and the illustrations accompanying it.
Basic Method: Study
Preparation: Teacher has selected vocabulary and prepared flashcards. Questions are on the chalkboard.
Step
1: Word "rounds" Meaning in
story - daily routine The class sang a round. Tom dug a round hole for the
tree. The milkman delivers milk to every
house on his nightly rounds. Flashcards:

4. Preparation for
Study i) A number of words are treated
for meaning and for visual recognition. each word is written
on the board, pronounced clearly by the teacher, then by the
class. Teacher gives meaning or illustrates with board
sketches, and where necessary, the word is shown in context.
Finally each word is presented rapidly by means of flash
cards. ii) Teacher briefly introduces
story title and author. Children study illustrations in the
story and suggest events which may occur. Teacher questions
where necessary to clarify and extend
observations. Step
2: 1. Why did Ned feel
gloomy? 2.What jobs did Ned want to
do? 3. How do you know Ned enjoyed
himself? Setting the
Problem Teacher reveals the board questions
which are read aloud by the class. Step
3: The story "Just As
Good". Finding the
Solution Children read story marking
sentences which help in answering the questions. Where time
and ability permit, written answers are attempted. Teacher
assists children with word recognition or comprehension
difficulties. Step
4: Children's answers plus story text
proof. Checking Findings and
Enrichment Oral and written answers are given
to each of the questions. Evidence to support conclusions is
read by a number of students. Step
5: ConsolidationTeacher
commends children for accuracy of observations, contribution
to discussions and cooperative behaviour etc.
