General Aim: Development of skill (Expression) Grade Level: 4/5 Primary

Specific Aims: To devise possible story plans and to list vocabulary in preparation for a written composition.

Basic Method: Practice (modified)

Preparation: Teacher has prepared a number of quick sketches and has ruled the board for listing of vocabulary. Picture wire and clips are ready for display of drawings.

Step 1:

Illustration of typical Father's Day - Breakfast in Bed

To consider ideas and language for the topic, "And that's how Dad had breakfast in bed!"

Arousal of Interest

An illustration is used to prompt recall of holiday events.

Teacher states the aim of the lesson.

Step 2:

e.g. 1. Preparation of breakfast 2. Arranging the tray. 3.Surprise for Dad.

Illustration showing breakfast all over Dad and the bed clothes.

Possible plot: 1.Breakfast prepared 2. Mishap (trip over cat/ toy/etc) 3. Surprised Dad!

Possible: stumbled, cascaded, shattered, noisily, clumsily, reaction, expression, amused, upset etc.

Recall of Process

Through questioning teacher elicits the possible events preceding that illustrated.

A second illustration is displayed and a more interesting sequence is requested.

 

 

Vocabulary appropriate to moods and situations is listed on the board.

  

Step 3:

Practice

Children commence writing the introductory paragraph, while teacher supervises, assisting students with spelling or grammatical problems.

 Step 4:

Sentence variety and interest, aptness of vocabulary and expression.

 

Assessment

Selected students read opening sentences to the class. Criticism and comments are invited.

Teacher commends children for contribution to the lesson.

Step 5:

Renewed Practice

Children continue writing to completion. Books are collected for correction by the teacher and for analysis for a follow up lesson.
