It may not be easy to access costumes from Shakespeare's era, and though I realise that you do not have to hand in a costume for assessment, perhaps it is important to consider this. I think a modern theme may work beautifully. Consider the recent film production of Romeo and Juliet -it was a huge success. I think if you were planning to go with a modern costume though, you should create a modern theme entirely. There are endless possibilities -you also use modern language -slang. You'd need to choose a fairly bossy female to take on the role of Lady Macbeth, but also someone that could handle the madness she suffers late in the play. Macbeth could be made to look very weak as a character with the right actor, for some reason someone pale and/or blond comes to mind -someone softly spoken and easily intimidated. Someone like the character Dustin Hoffman played in RAIN MAN perhaps. I consider the whole idea of a modern theme to be brilliant -why be traditional, reinventing is so much fun!! Goodluck.

YOu could also think about mixing images. Do you have a modern interpretation with old era costumes? Or vice versa? Do you have an old setting and costumes with modern language? Would this work, or would it be difficult and end up confusing the audience.
Either way I think this is an important production issue, and worth a mention in terms of your assessement. I mean afterall, look at the huge budgets movies run up in costume design alone!

Depends on what kind of a production you would be going for. Are you wanting to make a modern day interpretation of Macbeth, along the lines of Bazs Romeo and Juliet? Then i would go for the more modern styles. If you are wanting to make a period piece, than stick with the old day styles. For ideas on costumes for this you may want to watch "Shakespeare in Love", not the best film in the world but it has got some excellent costumes ideas.

The right clothing for the play would appropiate so it will improve the play by making it look more realistic.

For an assessment which i recently had to do i decided to have a traditional theme, however, after researching some costumes on the net i was was heaps dissapointed to see all the things that i could have done with a modern theme. But if ur going 4 that das cool!
