Hey all hope you can help me with my questions. How would you sum up what a nuclear bomb is made of? what was the impact of this to the surrounding islands? What was the need to create a bomb like this? why did they need to test the bomb? what was Americas reaction to the bomb testing? That is only a few of my questions that I need to be answered. If you have answere these questions I can give more out to you. Thanks for your help. From Jo P.s if yopu wanna contact me any other way send an email at porkcarter@hotmail.com

1)Uranium + explosives
2)Radiation
3)Massive destruction
4)They didn't. When they threw down the 1st one, they were not sure if it would work or not. But if you mean the more recent tests: Because it is very unstable.
5)Did they care?

1) Depends on the bomb - Uranium, Plutonium etc
2) general effect was radioactive fallout (a white ash, including plutonium and iodine-131) this concentrates in human thyroid glands causing thyroid cancers, abnormailites etc. Much of the natural growing food on islands is also contaminated, fish poisoning (particularly in French Polynesia).
3) Each country who tested in the Pacific wanted the ability to threaten nuclear war but also protect against it. The Cold War made each country very tense and the nuclear arms race grew from there.
4) They needed to test bombs to perfect new developments added and test their effects on various things such as submarines, military personnel, animals, naval vessels etc. Some tests were also political demonstrations of the country's ability to threaten nuclear war (for example Operation Redwing).
5) America were more concerned with national security and "muscle-flexing" to worry about the consequences for those living in the Pacific

In answer to what a nuclear bomb is made of, it is usually composed of Plutonium although the earlier ones contained Uranium. The atomic bomb works by firing a neutron at high speed right at a hollow sphere of Plutonium/Uranium. Just as th neutron reaches the center of the hollow sphere, explosives surounding the Plutonium/Uranium discharge and the sphere collapses around the neutron. As a result, it gets stuck and splits the first atom. From then on, it is a chain reaction and many other atoms split. The hydrogen bomb works almost the same way. It is an atomic bomb with a layer of Diterium ( I think thats how you spell it, it's an isotope of hydrogen) sorrounding the explosives. When the bomb goes off, there is enough heat to cause fusion with the Diterium atoms. This makes the bomb much more powerful. You can really get into the details, but his is just a breif synopsis.
