Mistake 1: Ms Milano in her introduction, i feel she failed to establish an any authority over her students. As a result when she tried to discipline her students, her commandments were ignored. Mistake 2: I also feel she was not firm in her instructions towards her students, in which portayed her to be an easy target for the students to undermine anything she says.

I believe the first couple of minutes of a class are the most important ones for establishing control and boundaries for behaviour. Ms Milano failed (even before entering the class) to respond to sexually suggestive comments made by the 2 male students which gave them the upper hand for the behaviour which followed. She also laughed at some of their jeers and jokes - which i think is alright when rapour has been established with students - but in this instance meant that they thought they could continue behaviing the same way

G'Day, i feel that the mistake she made was to start the "class" without having any control over it. Don't you think she could have been better off to wait calmely before attempting to engage with "her" lesson? Mistake nmber 2, she fails to establish clearly and uncompromisingly a teacher/student relationship. There are many sexual inuindos going on (is she going to become a friend, girlfriend..?) and that is not a proffessional way as ateacher to deal with teenage students no??

I Think in that Class there was clearly a couple of Students who were the
ring leaders. I think if she had made an example of them from the beginning
it would have been a very different case indeed. It is important to have a
idea of class politics and heiracharies from the very beginning.
Too much smiling BIG NOO NO. Especiallly at the beginning of the year with a
new class. YOU LOOOSE THEM AT THE BEGINNING AND ITS ALL OVER.
A Teacher must well at least initially to be almost like GOD, See all and
hear all. For that to happen standing at the front of a class or even worse
sitting down are not good ideas. The teacher must move around be in all
places at once but they are atleast settled.

I complitely agree with Adib's comments according Ms Milano,s mistakes.

Two areas that i would identify and manage would be firstly, to establish a position of authory in which, i was in control of classroom activities and not the students. This could be done by expressing firm disciplinary policies within the classroom environment. Secondly, to establish a level of porfessionalism that would introduce a clear notion of a teacher/student relationship.

Being a New Teacher is a scary thing. Im Scared about going on prac.
This is where is think a teacher and especially a new teacher needs to
have two realities. One a inner reality which is he/she is scared and an
outer reality of an self confident motivated and skilled teacher. Never let
the students see fear. If see fear it is like sharks getting sight of blood.
So I would have tried harder not to expose that fear.
Emotion Is Bad.Very Bad.When a teacher allows the emotions to get involved the
teacher will lose it and will scream annd yell. THAT IS EXACTLY what will
please them for you to loose it. You might have won the battle for a seconnd
when they all shut up but you have lost the war. If i was in her position i
hope i would have been able too control by anger and emotions a bit more.

I like the strategy described in the lesson last week - sending a student out at the start of the class - or something similar. I think that as a teacher its really important to establish your authority early on. Let them know who's boss to start with, and then later on build rapport with them and let them see your 'alright' by letting them talk sometimes etc. It is virtually impossible to do it the other way round - going in as their friend and then trying to establish control of the classroom. It will end in chaos. Being able to achieve that initial control is another issue!!

Now, when I have finished this course, and looked back at Ms Millano first lesson I am able to understand the mistakes she did at the beginning. I feel she did not have any education on this matter. However, she prooved she was a great teacher, because she overcame all that problems and erned the students confidence, what is in my opinion crucial for all teachers.

At the beginning of this course I taught as many other students, that Ms Millamo has lost her students, but I was wrong. Now after I have finished this course, Ilooked differently at mistakes she made. She lacked both knowledge and confidence about classroom relationship and management, but she liked the job, showed persistence, interest in students welfare and learning, therefore she got them back and moved on.
