She needs to set clear expectations about behviour, and make sure these are met before trying to proceed with marking the role etc. She also seems to allow her personality to fluctuate too much. One minute she is almost pleading with the class to try and get along, the next she is snapping at them and calling them a bunch of animals.

Ms Milano made a big mistake by calling them a bunch of animals, and also she made another big mistake when she did not respond to a student insult on teaching profession.I feel, that if she did so she could start building a better friendly relationship with the students.

Ms Milano could have maybe tried:
1. Getting the two boys at the start to sit down and establishing her space and role from day one.
2. As soon as the racial comments started - making it clear that these comments are not acceptable in her classroom and if comments continued to send to supervised time out or what ever discipline system is in the school. This could possibly be tried with the mobile phone as well.
3. Try to find out where they are coming from and tap into what interest them. The comment they are animals is not going to gain any respect. I'm sure we will all feel like this at one stage but you don't say it.

Ms Milano needs to establish her authority straight away, this is harder to do as she is arriving late. She should not have let the boys take over her introduction, or decended into insults and mane calling. With the racial comments she just ignored them but she should have made it clear that was unaceptable. She also gets rose ofside by ignoring that she prefers to be called rose.
