The new k-10 Mathematics Syllabus will be in schools for trialling February 2002 and to be implemented by July next year! So what's new? For a start, its K-10 focus. This means we actually get to see how topics & concepts we start to develop in primary school are developed in 7-10. Other major points: Strands will include: Working Mathematically; Number (includes Chance); Space & Geometry; Measurement; Patterning & Algebra; & Data While there are new strand organisers (headings), there is not much new content except for chance in the number strand. The big changes involve the delay of teaching the formal pen & paper algorithm for addition and subtraction until stage 2 and for multiplication & division until stage 3! I think this is great because the emphasis will now be on mental computation strategies such as those developed in the Count Me In Too program. BUT I'm sure many parents and teachers will not agree! Computations involving fractions are back in! Want to know more?? I'll fill you in on the rest at the Post Internship Conference.
