Misconceptions or naive conceptions

In the lecture someone asked me why I wanted to label children's ideas. As an educator/ scientist the first thing we do when presented with a phenomena is to label it. This allows us to define the characteristics of the phenomena. The second question is what do I call them. I think that it depends where I am standing. As a scientist I think that when children think fire is alive this is a misconception. As an educator I am more likely to think it as an alternative conception. I think I need to keep these two different perspectives in mind when I am talking to students. The ideas are not correct from a scientific point of view, but they are legitimate beliefs from the students point of view. What do other people think?
