English Language Proficiency

Competency in the use of the English language is a prerequisite for entry into the MTeach program. Students who have completed their first degree in a country where English is not the first language must be able to demonstrate their competence in English. The minimum acceptable level of English competency is indicated by a score of:

• at least 7.5 on the IELTS test, with no band less than 7,
• level 4.5 or better on the Australian Second Language Rating Scale
• level 4.5 or better on TWE (Tests of Written English) or
• at least 80% on CULT (Combined Universities Language Test) or
• 600 or better on TOEFL (Tests of English as a Foreign Language)
• an equivalent score on another accredited test, including those administered by the Faculty of Education.

These tests may be done through:

• the Institute of Languages (University of New South Wales)
• Insearch Language Centre (University of Technology, Sydney)
• NCELTR (Macquaire University)
