Undergraduate Prerequisites: Primary Program

Go to the MTeach homepage

Prospective students must meet certain minimum requirements in their undergraduate studies, in order to be qualified to teach in the Primary (K-6) school. These prerequisites are designed to ensure that the teaching subject knowledge of prospective students meets certain minimum expectations.

Candidates who wish to qualify as a Primary school teacher must have completed a broad background of studies in their undergraduate degree, with subjects covering or relevant to at least three areas of the curriculum (Key Learning Areas) taught in Primary schools (at least one of which should have been studied to second year level or beyond ).

The Key Learning Areas in the Primary school curriculum are:

  1. Creative arts
  2. English
  3. Human Society and its Environment (HSIE)
  4. Mathematics
  5. Personal development, health education and physical education (PDHPE)
  6. Science and Technology
  7. Languages other than English

In some circumstances, undergraduate studies in Information technology or Psychology may be accepted in lieu of one of the above KLA groups.

For local students, it is a requirement for admission to the MTeach program that they acquire from the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) a statement of their eligibility for employment as a primary teaching specialist, upon completion of the MTeach. The DET bases its classification as a subject specialist on studies undertaken in the undergraduate degree(s)

The NSW Department of Education and Training's criteria for employment as a Primary school teacher can be viewed on the DET website:
