What is this course all about?
Hello year 9. The purpose of this project is to get you to use Information Technologies (computers and software) more. This computer based work has been constructed to help you to learn about the topic Business. During the next 4 weeks we will be investigating what businesses are, doing fieldwork and looking at case studies.
What needs to be done before the topic is started?
You need to go onto the yahoo web group site and fill out your personal details etc. You must enter yourself as Rylie9commerce, or Cem9comerceíotherwise your work will not be accepted. You are required to write down write aspects of the business topic (in your textbook) you would like to learn about most. After flicking through your textbook your are invited to review this web site and comment on the good and bad things about it. You are to submit a 250-word explanation of what interests you most about this topic, and what you think of the web site / activities.
Homework / class work submissions- compulsory
The first part of this topic that you will be required to complete will be some basic textbook exercises. A variety of questions will be selected from the textbook. You will need to submit these responses to helenadowning@hotmail.com
This is my personal e-mail. The reason why you will submit your work to me at this e-mail address is so that you canít copy each otherís work. The yahoo e-mail is a group e-mail. Every body will receive the yahoo mail.
The reason why I would like to monitor the time and days when you complete you homework is so that I can map whether or not you have a study routine, or whether you leave your work until the last minute. Hopefully we will be able to go through homework management skills and other techniques to help you complete you work more effectively and efficiently.
Web Quest - Compulsory
Quite a large part of this topic will be done in the form of a web quest. This web quest is a process whereby you visit certain websites (given to you) in order to complete a variety of classroom activities. You are to complete each of the 7 components of the web quest. You will complete one component each lesson. If you complete this work early, you will be able to go on to do some extension exercises and activities.
You will also be required to visit various websites, and to submit tasks based on these in class. Therefore it is essential that you clarify what you need to be doing at the beginning of each lesson so that you are able to successfully complete your work. These submissions will be marked and counted as part of your reports.
Donald Trump- compulsory
This webpage is also there so that you can ask me questions between classes. You can also use the page to talk to others about how their class work is going or about general things that you have learnt about business in the media. You are required to submit at least 1 submission to the web group each commenting either on Donald Trumpís achievements, The Apprentice shows or what is happening, on the ëhairí or anything else about Donald Trump that interests you. This has been designed to facilitate group learning. Please title these e-mails with your name and the title ëTrumpí

Case study work and excursion- compulsory
You will be required to go through the Used and Abused business case study and to develop 2 questions that you would like to ask the shop assistant when we go on our excursion. You are not allowed to submit the same questions as anybody else, and you will need to read other peoples submissions in order to ensure that you do not submit the same questions as other students. Who ever submits the question first has the marks for that question. Eg, if Kat submits Why did you move? and Jordan submits the same question a day later, Kat owns that question. These questions will be developed into a worksheet which you will need to fill out and complete whilst on the excursion to Used and Abused. You will be allowed to buy clothes at the store (its pretty cheap) if you wish. I would also like you to explain what kind of stock the store sells, and whether or not it appeals to your tastes, and why this is or isnít the case. Please label the titles of your e-mail Used and Abused and donít forget to include your name.
Business Marketing Assignment
You will need to use the information gathered, and that on the website, to explain how you would improve the used and abused business. You are most welcome to look through the year 11 Business Studies textbook in order to complete this work, as the text will have clear and detailed explanations of terms and concepts that you might have difficultly with. More information will be provided to you as the task is explained and set. Don't forget that you are more than welcome to visit Used and Abused at any stage to collect more info, draw floor plans, make videos etc. The assignment will be due after I have left and is to be approximately 500 words in length

Please use your web group email to submit your homework to me. If you submit your wok via any other accounts this work will be marked with a zero (or wonít get to me!).
Go to the commerce homepage. On this homepage you will see a ëWeb questí link. You need to click on this link and read the introduction on this page. Basically, you will be going to the specified website and using the information from that website to complete class activities. Make sure that you do not plagiarise or cut and paste chunks of information directly from the internet. If you are finding that the information on the website is too heavy or difficult to read please tell me in class. If you are at home and would like to email me with your questions or concerns you are most welcome. The reason why I have given you particular websites to go to is so that your encounters with inappropriate web material are eliminated.
How to do the Trump submissions
You will need to keep up to date with your homework. The general submission could be providing facts or media information to other students about topics related to Donald Trump or his business. Or, you are most welcome to ask other students questions, or respond to peopleís questions about Mr Trump. Please do not leave rude or inappropriate comments on this discussion board about other students in the class. If you do this you will be put on a classroom contract. For serious offences you will have to see the Head teacher of HSIE.
If you have trouble using this technology we can go through it together. I would rather that you learn new things (even if difficult) rather than relying on things with which you are comfortable. I also donít think that it is appropriate that I have access to your personal e-mail account addresses. If you want to stay in contact or need help with schoolwork after the prac is over I am happy to keep the yahoo group running.
Where you will be getting case study information from
The Used and Abused Case study link is located on the Home page. You will need to familiarise yourself with this Case study. After week 2 I will be giving you a surprise quiz about the case study. I will not be telling you the date of this quiz so you will need to know this case study inside out. You may write a short summary or notes using the information in the case study link to use when this quiz pops up. You will not be able to use print outs of the case study for this purpose. You will be given some class time to write notes.
Hopefully we will be able to organise an excursion to Used and Abused, which is owned by one of my family members. Used and Abused is a clothing shop located on Elmore Road. It has existed in Newtown, formerly in Wilson Street, for 12 years. Hopefully we will be able to visit the shop, ask questions and buy clothes from the store.
What to do if the excursion is cancelled
If the excursion is cancelled then we will be looking at a series of photographs taken from the old shop, and a variety of photos taken at the new premises and comparing the shopís change of layout. We will also look at the previous and new location of the shop and consider the advantages and disadvantages of the two different locations. Considering that the shop is very close to the school, you could (if you were keen) go to the new shop and ask some questions, look at the stock or purchase some crazy clothing. You are most welcome to visit the shop whenever you wish. Visiting the shop will help you to better visualise and understand the case study as we do it.
Completing your business assignment (500 words)
You are to design a poster promoting the business and its new location. You may choose to advertise a sale or key aspects of the business, such as cool clothes or dress up items. You may choose to take photographs of the store if you would like to add these to your poster.
You will then be required to explain, in 500 words, what you would do to promote the business in its early days at the new Enmore road location. It is essential that you include the following:
