Assessment of HSIE Core 1 Tasks

1. Case analysis of HSIE Cases in relation to Virtual School: 50%

 

Criteria:

 

  • issues explored in case
  • application of case to school context, including school procedures and student characteristics
  • application of case HSIE learning and teaching strategies

2. Development of 4 lesson plans for a HSIE Core topic: 50%

 

Criteria:

 

  • timing, lesson structure
  • specificity of outcomes
  • resources used, variation of objectives
  • provision for varied student abilities
  • literacy aspects of lesson
  • relevance of content

Assessment of HSIE Core 2 Tasks

Students in groups will develop a unit of work that will incorporate insights from analysis of learners learning styles, current assessment processes, literacy approaches and use of technology: 100%

Assesment of HSIE Core 3 Tasks

Date Due 17th June in HSIE Seminar

Students in groups of three will develop a Teaching and Learning Resource Folder to support the teaching of the subject they have chosen. The resource folder should include:

 

  • A high quality program for a topic in the appropriate syllabus including the relevant teaching and learning strategies and resource. The program should be presented in grid format ( 2 pages ) and contain a topic/unit overview. The program should include three sample lesson plans modelling different types of strategies that may be used in the teaching and learning of this topic. One of the lessons should be aimed at development of higher order thinking skills.
  • A short evaluation of the current textbooks supporting the syllabus
  • An annotated bibliography including websites and other current resources that may be used in the teaching and learning of your topic annotated list of websites by topic
  • An internal in school assessment instrument assessing student outcome achievement as specified by the syllabus. The assessment criteria for measuring outcome achievement must be included in tabulated form.

 

Outcomes for HSIE Core 1 and HSIE Core 2

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

  • identify the nature of current philosophies and pedagogical approach in syllabus documents
  • develop a cohesive program of learning based on appropriate syllabus documents and best practice
  • identify the specific learning needs of students and design materials and strategies to accommodated these needs
  • reflect upon and evaluate the programs, their teaching and their student's learning and implement change where appropriate
  • design and utilities a variety of assessment instruments and procedures to measure teaching/learning outcomes

 

Outcomes for HSIE Core 3

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

  • identify the nature of current philosophies and pedagogical approach in Aboriginal Studies, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture syllabus documents
  • develop a cohesive program of learning based on appropriate in Aboriginal Studies, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture syllabus documents and best practice
  • identify the specific learning needs of students and design materials and strategies to accommodated these needs
  • reflect upon and evaluate in Aboriginal Studies, Legal Studies, and Society and Culture programs, their teaching and their student's learning and implement change where appropriate
  • design and utilities a variety of assessment instruments and procedures to measure teaching/learning outcomes
  • incorporate a global education perspective to planning and teaching in the HSIE key learning area

Outcomes for HSIE Teaching History, Geography, Economics/Commerce/Business Studies

At the completion of the HSIE Core, and Teaching History, Geography and Economics/Commerce/Business Studies students will be able to:

 

  • demonstrate knowledge and understandings of present philosophies and practices underpinning HSIE teaching and learning in schools
  • demonstrate and apply the necessary teaching skills to implement syllabus aims, objectives and learning outcomes through the utilization of best practice in programming and teaching/learning strategies
  • exhibit an understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of subjects in Human Society and Its Environment and the broad perspective this can bring to student learning and classroom instruction
